Parents and Guardians:
The purpose of this message is to help all parents/guardians plan for the 2022-2023 school year regarding their PK-12 children’s school lunch and breakfast.
Congress has decided NOT to extend the funding for universal free meals. This means school districts are no longer able to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students enrolled in the Parkston School District. As a result, most students will not have free or reduced-price benefits for the 22-23 school year, unless the head of household submits a free and reduced-price meal application for approval based on the USDA guidelines for the 2022-2023 school year.
As the Parkston School District receives additional guidance from the Division of Child and Adult Nutrition Services (CANS), we will share relevant information and paperwork for families looking to complete a free and reduced-price meal application for 2022-2023 (e.g., expect updated forms in August). Please understand that there will be NO grace period (30 days) at the start of school unless the parent/guardian filled out an application this 21-22 school year.
The application for Free and Reduced meals plays an integral part in determining the amount of Federal funding the Parkston School District receives in order to administer the Title I program. We strongly encourage all families to fill out the application regardless and let the USDA guidelines determine eligibility.
